Santee Harley Drag Pipe Review
August 9, 2008

There are very few pipes on the market that look as good as a killer pair of Santee Drag pipes. A buddy of mine at work recently installed a pair of these Santee drag pipes on his softail and I wanted to share the results.
In a nutshell, he loves them.
Drag Pipe Power
A number of know it alls talked about how much power he would lose and that they would make the bike run hot and all that nonsense but my buddy has never been one to listen to anyone and went ahead with them anyways. Two things he was after, a great pipe at a good price and that awesome Harley Davidson sound. He was replacing a pair of slip ons that had seen better days and money is an issue, so Drag Pipes won the day.
I've ridden his bike a number of times and I have to say I didn't feel any power loss with these pipes. If anything it feels stronger but without dynoing the bike you never know for sure. It could have been my enthusiasm from the extra noise but I would say the pipes pulled the same as the slip ons in the midrange and better on the topend.
If you aren't familiar with Santee pipes then they American made and offer a two year warranty on both material and workmanship. The drag pipes provide that classic Harley Davidson look and sound and overall I'd say they were a great deal.
Santee Drag Pipe Fit
The pipe size varies but they offer 2 1/4'' maximum coverage chrome heat shields that will make sure they stay looking good for years to come. The pipes installed pretty easily and didn't require a whole lot of effort to get installed. We rejetted the carb up slightly to accomodate the extra exhaust flow and overall I'd say the fit and finish was damn good for a set of drag pipes. I've seen some of these that were awful so I was pleasantly surprised.
If you are considering a pair of drag pipes for your bike then I would take a good look at these Santee drag pipes. They are perfect for those of us that are on a budget and can't afford to pop 500-800 bucks on a set of pipes for an already too expensive toy.
You will absolutely love the sound that these Santee drag pipes give off. It just epitomizes Harley Davidson and will not disappoint. As for all the drag pipe "poo pooers" that say you will lose all kinds of power, I couldn't feel it. As I said before I think the pipes were the same in the mid range and picked up power on the top end but without a dyno to optimize, its hard to say.
He bought the pipes for the look and the sound anyways so as long as they didn't llose power then he was a happy camper.

Bub Jug Huggers Harley Pipe Review
August 9, 2008
I was at my Harley Dealer the other day checking out Street Glides and I saw a bike with an absolutely awesome pair of pipes on it. I couldn't wait to come home and write about them.
The pipes in question turned out to be a set of Bub Jug Hugger pipes and they were on a 2005 Softail that was set up right. Right in my opinion is lowered, black and loud, just like any Harley should be. (j/k) I spent a few minutes looking these pipes over pretty carefully and talking with the owner.
Jug Hugger Fit and Finish
I didn't install the pipes so I can only tell you what I saw. The chrome on the Jug Huggers looked great, deep and lustrous like a good pair of pipes should be. The heat shields on these pipes were a full 2 1/2 inch shield that gave them an awesome "fat" pipe look and they were capped off with the best set of billet aluminum endcaps that I have seen on a set of pipes.
These pipes looked AMAZING!
According to the owner, they installed easily. Most Harley Pipes are really not that terribly difficult to install. A lot of novice riders have never worked on a motorcycle before so it seems intimidating but I have installed dozens of pipes, it's a piece of cake. Don't pay the dealer to do it, it's far too easy to do yourself.
Jug Hugger Performance
I don't have any dyno charts to work from and can only tell you what the owner of the bike relayed to me but he was quite happy with the performance of his Jug Huggers. This was not his first Harley nor his first set of pipes and he was quite satisfied.
I will say that he made it clear he bought them more for the looks and sound than he did for the performance. After seeing them in person then I'd say he made a great choice. I think I like these pipes better than anything I've ever seen, it's got to be the turndowns. They are awesome looking.
I did check out the Bub site and if you are a performance junkie then you will be happy to know that the Jug Huggers are equipped with a Max Flow baffle for maximum power. A stealth baffle and a torque chamber are available to give you some tuning options. I would assume the stealth baffle is a quieter baffle and the torque chamber will allow you to tune for low end and midrange power.
Very nice to have options.
Jug Hugger Sound
I made sure to listen to him take off from the parking lot to see if they sounded as good as they looked and I was not disappointed. I personally prefer a pipe that has a deeper note to it with more bass I guess is how I would describe it.
These pipes definitely fit that bill, I expected them to be loud and obnoxious and while they definitely had a bark to them, it was not an obnoxious exhaust note at all. They sounded as good as they looked.
I will be adding a video page to this site shortly that should allow you to hear some examples of the Bub Jug Huggers for yourself. Video isn't the best because it never quite sounds like it does in person but you can at least get the idea.
Conclusion
If you can't tell I was quite enamored with these Jug Huggers. I guess they just have that perfect "look" for me and I am seriously going to contemplate replacing the D&D Fat Cat on my 2007 FXSTB with these pipes. My bike is slammed and the Fat Cat is just not a friendly pipe for a lowered bike.
If you are looking for a great set of pipes that look great, perform great and sound great then I would give the Bub Jug Huggers a pretty serious look. They are one of the nicest looking pipes I have seen on a Harley Davidson.

Santee Skirt Blowers
August 9, 2008
How can a set of pipes with a name like Skirt Blowers NOT be cool?
Paul Yaffe is one of the most innovative pipe designers out there and he has teamed up with Santee to offer this ultra cool creation for Harley Davidson motorcycles.
I must admit that I have never used these myself but a friend of mine has them on his bike and he really likes them simply because of the way they look and sound. He has a custom frame, stretched hardtail and the pipes just look way cool on his ride. They fit the bike nicely.
I don't have any dyno stats and without having ridden his bike I cannot attest to how these pipes performed compared to anything else. I don't know that someone would buy this pipe as a performance pipe anyways. This is a pipe that is designed to do two things and do them well. Make noise and look wicked cool and the Santee Skirt Blowers do both in my opinion.
I found a cool video on the internet to share that shows the Skirt Blowers in action. This is not my buddies bike but at least you can hear them in action.

Vance and Hines Harley Pro Pipe Review
August 9, 2008
If you've never used a set of Vance and Hines pipes on one of your motorcycles then you are missing out. I have to admit that I am a big fan of Vance and Hines pipes in general and the pipe we are looking at today is no different. The Vance and Hines Pro Pipe has a LOT of things going for it if you are considering it.
Vance and Hines Fit and Finish
The Vance and Hines Pro Pipe offers the same great fit that all Vance and Hines pipes enjoy. They are machined and formed from quality stock and molded to fit your Harley Davidson like a glove.
Vance and Hines has recently updated the chrome finish of the Pro Pipe to offer its blue proof technology across the entire length of the pipe. In years past the blue proof technology used to only apply to the heat shields and did not cover the muffler body itself but that has now changed.
The blue proof technology now extends front to back of the pipe. I can tell you from first hand experience that the chrome finish on the Vance and Hines Pro Pipe is some of the best around. You will not be disappointed with the fit or finish of the Vance and Hines Pro Pipe.
Vance and Hines Pro Pipe Sound
If you are unfamiliar with the sound of a 2 into 1 exhaust pipe on a Harley Davidson motorcycle then let me tell you that you will either love it or hate it. There usually isn't anything in the middle. The Pro Pipe is reasonably quiet at idle and part throttle but will really start to wail at wide open throttle.
If you are a loud pipe junkie then this pipe might not be for you. It definitely has a deep and healthy exhaust note but it isn't what I would consider a really loud pipe. Its the kind of pipe that you could come home at 2am and not wake up the entire neighborhood with it. It's definitely a Jekyll and Hyde kind of thing though because it turns into a beast at WOT.
Vance and Hines 2 into 1 Power
The power increase that you will recognize from installing this pipe onto your Harley Davidson will vary dramatically depending on your state of tune and how closely you get your tune dialed in. If you spend the time to have it dyno tuned after install then it wouldn't be uncommon to pick up a significant amount of power.
If you aren't familiar with a 2 into 1 pipe then what these pipes do is allow a much better scavenging of the cylinder than most traditional 2 into 2 pipes but they still need to be tuned for optimum power. The typical characteristic of a 2 into 1 pipe is that it will FEEL SIGNIFICANTLY stronger than a 2 into 2 because they tend to produce decent torque increases in the low to mid range power band.
A 2 into 1 equipped Harley Davidson will typically be an absolute joy to ride as they make power where you use it most often. It's hard to predict power increases but 10 hp and 10 tq is not uncommon and while this might not sound like much, it will impact the way the bike feels, dramatically.

Supertrapp 2 into 1 Harley Pipe Review
August 9, 2008
One of my favorite pipes ever has got to be the Supertrapp 2 into 1 setup with the tuneable discs. This pipe combination is just a dynamite homerun combination for me personally. I absolutely love the 2 into 1 design both for the looks that it provides and the useable power increases they provide.
I am just one prod away from installing a pair of the Supertrapp 2 into 1 pipes on my 2007 FXSTB and replacing the D&D Fat Cats with it. I am not unhappy with my Fat Cats but they are not compatible with a lowered bike and my bike is slammed in the weeds. I like the lowered look too much to give it up so I need to make a change to the pipe.
Supertrapp Fit and Finish
Supertrapp cut its teeth in the superbike world and have been making pipes forever. Think Kerker and you should recognize a familiar cousin. Supertrapp uses all of the same tricks that the other manufacturers use such as a stepped pipe diameter, blue proof heat shields, and high quality fit and finish but their biggest advantage is the tuneable disc setup that has made Supertrapp famous.
ANY pipe will require a LOT of dyno tuning in order to maximize its power potential and many expert tuners will modify your pipes, drill them, weld on them, use cones, change baffles etc all in the name of tweaking just the right combination. With Supertrapp you don't need to do any of this, you simple adjust the number of discs in the endcap to tune both the powercurve and the sound of the pipe.
I have included a copy of an installation review that I found on the internet so you can see how simple the installation was for these pipes. They really don't install any differently than any other set of pipes for your Harley. That is one thing I love about HDs, they are simple machines and very easy to work on.
Supertrapp 2 into 1 Power
Supertrapp's will produce great power across the spectrum and it isn't uncommon to see gains of 10 hp and similar torque numbers as well. The best part is that the power will come in the useable power curve, aka the rpm band that you will typically operate your motorcycle in.
Your gains will be more dramatic too depending on the original state of tune that your bike was in and the level of modifications that you have installed on your bike.
The install below includes some dyno charts at the bottom of the page so make sure you check them out before you go. If you're looking for a great 2 into 1 pipe then I would give the Supertapp 2 into 1 a good look, I know I am and fully expect to be sporting a pair of these on my Nightrain before too long.
Supertrapp 2 into 1 Install

Ok you're almost home. As you can see installing a set of pipes on a Harley Davidson is really quite simple and can be accomplished with basic hand tools.

Supertrapp 2 into 1 Dyno Results
Without getting overly carried away with tuning the pipe or the race tuner, at this point we gained an impressive 10 more horsepower and 6 more foot pounds of torque.
The most significant of those improvements were in the torque curve from around 3,500 to 4,500 RPM. This was a nice gain to the mid range and will make the bike fun to ride. Overall, our best numbers came in at 77.57 max. horsepower and 78.22 max torque.
Riding Impressions: Right off the bat I was very pleased with the look of the SuperTrapp 2 into 1 system; in spite of the fact that I’m not a big fan of crossovers or true duals. Once I fired it up I realized the sound had changed considerably. The tone is real good and very distinct to SuperTrapp. It isn’t annoyingly loud at idle or low RPM, but at the same time, opens up real nice when you get on it. As I headed out to the highway, I noticed that the bike had a lot more pull.
Going up through the gears, I felt that it got up to speed faster and the engine wasn’t working as hard. When I came off the exit ramp, after about 60 miles or so of highway time, there was no pop on deceleration. I have about 500 miles on this system now and the powdercoat is holding up real well. We plan on doing some further tuning to the disc system on this pipe, but for now we decided to stick to SuperTrapp’s suggested starting point.
Supertrapp SuperMegs Conclusion
What more can you say, a great looking pipe that performs well, fits great, sounds great and produces good power...all from a company with a legendary pedigree in the motorcycle exhaust world.

Rinehart 2 into 1 Harley Pipes
August 9, 2008
I am a self admitted pipe junkie. I admit it, I like to experiment with the different looks that a new set of pipes give, the different sounds that a set of pipes gives your Harley and last but not least, the different effects on the power level of your Harley Davidson.
Most new riders immediately complete a Stage 1 upgrade on their bikes upon buying their first Harley Davidson. The most important part of the Stage 1 upgrade is the pipe. I don't know of another external type bolt on that can impact the power band of your Harley Davidson motorcycle than the right exhaust pipe.
The Rinehart 2 into 1 pipe is one that I was dying to try as I really liked the way it looked on another FXSTB that I had seen on a ride one night. The chrome was flawless and the aggressive looking muffler was pretty sexy in my opinion. Who doesn't want a sexy looking Harley?
Rinehart 2 into 1 Sound
What does a Rinehart 2 into 1 sound like? Great question....I don't know why anyone bothers to ask these questions as sounds are interpreted so differently from person to person.
What sounds loud to one person, is just right to another so the only thing I can say is take anything anyone says about sound with a grain of salt. You would be better off to go park in the lot of your local Harley Davidson dealer and wait. I'd bet within an hour at least 1 of most types of pipes will show up on any given Saturday. Just listen to what they sound like in person.
My opinion of the Rinehart 2 into 1 pipe is that it sounds pretty good. It's a distinct bassy sound that most of the 2 into 1 pipes give and it has the distinct Rinehart chirp. This is hard to describe but Rinehart pipes are all known for it and even though it is barely noticeable, some people do not like it. Listen to a set at your dealer to see what I mean.
Rinehart 2 into 1 Power
How much power will a Rinehart 2 into 1 pipe give my bike? Another tough question to answer as all bikes will respond differently. On my own personal bike I replaced Vance and Hines Big Shot Staggered pipes with the Rinehart 2 into 1 pipe.
I dyno'd at 107hp and 115 ft/lbs with the V&H Big Shot pipes and I dyno'd at 110hp and 117 ft/lbs with the Rinehart pipe. The peak power was not very different at all but the pipe did offer a significant increase in the midrange and low end power that was very easy to feel on the butt dyno.
If money is an issue, then going from one decent pipe to another decent pipe, isn't the hot ticket. After spending some time with the dyno operator we determined that the Rinehart 2 into 1 pipe is definitely not the ideal for my size bike. I have a cammed and ported 107 cubic inch FXSTB and this is simply too much motor for this pipe in our opinion and Rinehart agreed.
I ended up going with a D&D Fat Cat pipe instead of the Rinehart and kept ALL of the midrange gains and picked up a bunch of top end as well. I wouldn't have any reservation at ALL recommending the Rinehart 2 into 1 pipe to someone with a stock size or mild engine.
It is a great pipe that looks great and performs well.
Rinehart 2 into 1 Fit and Finish
The Rinehart pipe fit my bike very nicely and went on in just about an hour or less. The chrome was almost perfect and the brackets lined up just right. The pipe needed no massaging to get installed at all.
The only issue I have with the fit and finish of the Rinehart 2 into 1 pipe is the collector shield where the 2 pipes join and merge into 1 pipe. The Rinehart uses a cover that goes over the merged pipe and makes it a clean transition.
My cover fit very poorly out of the box. I will say I was easily able to massage and manipulate it to get it to fit right but it was annoying and in my opinion, never quite looked right ever. I have seen other Rinehart pipes where the cover looked great and blended in nicely but mine wasn't one of those.
It's not the best design but the overall pipe still looks great. That's my 2007 FXSTB in the picture above.
Rinehart 2 into 1 Overall Review
To summarize this pipe, I would have to say I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a good 2 into 1 pipe. The pipe looks great, sounds great, fits decent and worked quite well. I don't keep too many pipes on my bike for very long but I did like this pipe.
It is not the best selection for a big inch or high horsepower motor but that is true of MOST of the out of the box Harley Davidson pipes. This pipe will not disappoint the average user and I would definitely recommend it.
The Rinehart 2 into 1 pipe is a great overall pipe for a Harley Davidson and you won't go wrong with it.

Harley Davidson Sportster Straight Shot Review
August 9, 2008
Vance and Hines made their name in the world of Superbikes but they have also become a dominant player in the cruiser world and more importantly the Harley Davidson Exhaust pipe world.
I had the chance to install a pair of Vance and Hines Straightshots HS my wife's 2005 883XL recently and I thought I would share my own personal opinion on the quality, fit and finish of the Vance and Hines Straight Shots for Sportsters.
V&H Straight Shots Sportster Quality
Let's talk about the quality of the Vance and Hines pipes. There is no doubt that Vance and Hines would rank at or near the top of the list if compared with any pipe manufacturer out there. I have installed them on a few Kawasaki Vulcan's I used to have and now on both of our Harley Davidsons and they were consistent.
The pipes use Vance and Hines blueproof technology and are a very solid, heavy gauge metal with nice, thick, solid flanges to bolt to the cylinder heads. The brackets are finished nicely and they lined up perfectly on the first try. I didn't have to massage, finagle, finesse or modify the pipe in anyway to install. They installed onto her 2005 Sportster XL easily, the first time.
The pipes come with some nicely chromed, 230 degree heat shields that wrap nicely around the base pipe and provide an awesome looking chrome finish that won't blue or discolor anyway. Vance and Hines have some of the nicest heat shields of any brand Harley pipe I have seen.
V&H Straightshots Sportster Performance
Many people install pipes not only to achieve that Harley sound but to squeak some more performance out of their bike. The Vance and Hines won't disappoint in that department either.
Vance and Hines uses step header technology that varies the diameter of the exhaust pipes in order to maximize the velocity and scavenging effect of the exiting gas. This technology has been utilized by Vance and Hines for years in their superbike pipes and they have utilized it in the Harley Davidson line as well.
Vance and Hines also uses their patented power chamber design which basically connects the two pipes with a crossover pipe of sorts that is designed to tune the exhaust to maximize the scavenging effect. The pipes are connected at a point and at an angle that allows one exhaust pulse to pull on the next exhaust pulse to better aid exhaust flow. The intention is to simulate the power gains you will see from a 2 into 1 pipe system but with the traditional 2 into 2 Harley Drag pipe look.
Vance and Hines Straightshot Sound
Usually one of the first questions that everyone will ask about a pipe is what does it sound like or does it sound good. If you think about it that is a tough question to answer because different pipes will sound different to different people. Good and bad is very subjective.
What do Vance and Hines Straighhots HS sound like? I think they sound awesome! They really woke up her Sportster and gave it some bark. On the first test ride after installing the pipes I noticed she was turning heads and getting a few thumbs up from pedestrians and other riders.
I had the V&H BSS on my 2007 FXSTB and they also sounded awesome but I will warn you that they are one of the louder pipes in this style of design. I have tried a number of pipes and/or my friends have run just about everything and we ALL agree that the V&H StraightShots HS are a fairly loud pipe but in my humble opinion, they sound awesome.
If you really hate the noise then you can always replace the standard baffle with a quieter baffle that is available from Vance and Hines for most Harley Davidsons.
In my opinion, most people who like the "pipe" sound will love the Vance and Hines Straightshot HS pipes for a Sportser. They fit right, they sound right, the perform right and they are a superb all around pipe for your Harley Davidson motorcycle.

D&D Fat Cat Harley Pipe Review
August 9, 2008
The D&D Fat Cat is one of the best kept secrets of the Harley Davidson world. The D&D Fat cat does not fit the traditional mold of what you think of when you think Harley Pipes mainly because it is a 2 into 1 pipe. Traditional Harley Pipes have always been 2 into 2 configuration like a traditional pair of Drag pipes. The 2 into 1 is the ticket however when it comes performance.
When you twist the throttle is when you really see the beauty that the Fat Cat provides. These pipes offer a very, very noticeable improvement to low and mid range torque numbers versus say a pair of V&H Big Shots. The 2 into 1 design shines when it comes to low and mid range torque and torque is what you feel when you take off from a light.
D&D Fat Cat Harley Pipes
My own personal ride is a 2007 FXSTB or Nightrain in case you aren't familiar with the code. I have a 107" Vtwin with cams, ported heads, pipes, a Daytona Twin Tec and a few other goodies. It's a pretty hot setup and gets down the road pretty good but I didn't realize how good it could be until I put a D&D Fat Cat pipe on the bike.
Wow. I haven't dyno'd the bike since the switch so I don't have any hard numbers but the difference on the butt dyno was definitely noticeable. The improvement in power was half the battle and the improvement in the exhaust note of the D&D Fat Cat was also a bonus. The D&D Fat Cat has a deep, bassy sound to it that sounds mean. In fact, it sound means even at part throttle, but it only gets better as you twist the go stick back.
At WOT, the D&D Fat Cat absolutely WAILS! Easily one of the best sounding Harley Davidson pipes I have ever heard. I have to tell you....I didn't think I would like these pipes, I put them on because I wanted the most power possible. After getting them on the bike, you couldn't pry these suckers away from me with a crowbar. I love them.
D&D Fat Cat Fit and Finish
The Fit and Finish was surprisingly good. D&D is a smaller company compared to say a Vance and Hines or someone like that but you would never know from the way the pipe was designed. I had them on the bike in about 30 minutes and the finish on the chrome was some of the best I have seen from any manufacturer.
I know this may sound like a one sided review but I like these pipes that much. They fit right, they look right, they sound right and most importantly they perform right. The only downside is they are not recommended for lowered bikes and from experience, they mean that.
The Muffler body on the D&D Fat Cat hangs low and has a decent diameter so it will easily drag on right turns on a lowered bike. D&D has answered the call with a new version of the Fat Cat called the Low Cat. The D&D Low Cat offers an upswept muffler position for the lowered bikes.
Great move as I have no intention of changing pipe companies now that I have these pipes. If you are open to the 2 into 1 design for your Harley Davidson then I don't think you will find a better pipe than the D&D Fat Cat for Harley Davidson.

Vance and Hines Big Shot Staggered Harley Pipes
August 9, 2008
The Vance and Hines Big Shot Staggered pipes are, in my opinion, some of the nicest pipes you can buy for your Harley Davidson motorcycle. Vance and Hines made its name in Superbike racing but they have nearly perfected the Harley Davidson exhaust system.
Big Shot Staggered Pros
- Chrome - The quality of the Vance and Hines chrome plating is second to none. I have used these Big Shot Staggered pipes on two import cruisers, my FXSTB and my wife's XL883 Sportster and every example was perfect. Deep lustrous chrome that held up great.
- Heat Shields - Vance and Hines heat shields wrap nearly all the way around the base pipe and do a great job of making it appears as though it is one solid, continuous pipe. They don't discolor at all and maintain a gorgeous shine.
- Fit - The fit of the Vance and Hines Big Shot Staggered pipes is great, they hug the bike nicely and line right up with the brackets with little fuss. They were a bit stubborn to install up around the header flange area, a very tight tolerance led to a lot of wrangling to get the pipes to snuggle into place.
- Sound - This could be a pro or a con depending on the person but the Big Shot Staggered Harley Pipe is loud! It's not a bad loud but it is pretty loud so if you prefer a deeper quieter exhaust note then this pipe probably isn't for you. If you want to wail, then this pipe WAILS!
Big Shot Staggered Cons
- Installation - As I mentioned a little bit of a stinker compared to some I have done. Certainly not enough in my opinion to merit concern.
- Sound - As I said before Pro or Con, depends on your point of view. They are loud.....no question.
- Power - These pipes perform pretty darn good for an out of the box pipe and they use Vance and Hines powerchamber technology to maximize the scavenging affect.
- Price - Vance and Hines is pure quality. They are one of the best pipes on the market and you will pay for quality. In my opinion well worth the price.
Vance and Hines packs a lot of technology into their Harley Davidson pipes, not the least of which is their Power Chamber design. If you are unfamiliar with that then this is straight from the Vance and Hines website.
Power Chamber - The race-inspired Power Chamber is a unique crossover system that delivers the power and performance advantages of a 2-into-1 race system, yet keeps the intimidating look of a 2-into-2 drag pipe. The Power Chamber uses the volume of both mufflers to improve scavenging of each cylinder for more efficient combustion. The end product is more power, more torque and one perfect sound.
I guess the bottom line is this, I wouldn't hesitate one bit to put a set of Vance and Hines Big Shot Staggered pipes on any Harley Davidson I owned.
They look great, they sound great, the quality, fit and finish are awesome and you won't go wrong with Vance and Hines on your Harley Davidson motorcycle. If you are looking for a set of pipes for your Harley Davidson then I would give the Vance and Hines Big Shot Staggered pipes a good look.
